I need this dictation software to help me while writing manuscripts in Microsoft Word I'm working on three new fiction books, and I'm planning to self publish all 3 next year. Unfortunately, my eyes are in bad shape from constant computer eye strain though. So this program will likely make writing the initial manuscripts much easier. Since I find it tedious to put in commands for nost punctuation, I will have to add much of it during the editing process after the initial manuscript is written.

I haven't had an opportunity to spend a lot of time using this software since I bought it, but the training sessions I did went smoothly.

I will look forward to using this software in Microsoft Word. But in this regard, I have a warning. Microsoft restricts the use of this product in their Office programs unless you go in and add BIOS strings into the computer software. The instructions for installing the BIOS into the computer software were thorough enough that I did it within 10 minutes.

But keep in mind that this must be done before it will work in Microsoft Office programs like Word. I have this love-hate relationship with Dragon. As for the dictation, it's actually quite good.

Once you adapt to the process it's actually very easy. I've never been a very efficient keyboardist and to make matters worse I've been developing one heck of a case of carpal tunnel. Now with Dragon I can dictate virtually everything. I probably respond and send out 20 to 25 emails a day, minimum. Virtually all of those are dictated now.

Even accounting for editing and reviewing the amount of time I'm saving is phenomenal. Now for the hate part, at least every 10 days I have to reinstall or at least repair the program.

I have no idea where it goes. I have contacted support and while they were very nice people they didn't really help me very much. One thing they indicated was that I was using an old version, which was the version I downloaded from Amazon. Once I downloaded from the Dragon website I thought all my problems would be over as I had a more up-to-date version.

No such luck. I'm still reinstalling, or at least repairing every week or week and half. Based on what support told me I thought perhaps if I stayed on top of the updates maybe this would take care of things. But there doesn't seem to be a way to check for updates, this has to be one of the few programs that doesn't have an update element built into the program.

If there were a more reliable competitor on the market I would likely use it, especially given the price you think the program would be more dependable, and unfortunately that's just not the case. I hope the next version will be better thought out but I can't say that I'll be inclined to buy it as my guess is it will be very pricey. Installation was easy, getting things set up took all of thirty minutes.

If you need help, Nuance customer support is on point. Let me preface this next part by saying I haven't been using Dragon for more than a week. But, even on the first day, if I spoke clearly, Dragon understood me. If you've used Google Text to Speech but needed better commands and a way to input your own language, then Dragon is for you.

I could even speak at my normal talking speed, making for very fast transcriptions. Why the 4 stars for Home then? I did not have too many issues with the programming miss hearing me as it was easy to correct small mistakes by teaching dragon a new word. However, being able to add new commands is a really nifty feature that does NOT come with dragon home. It is a part of the program I think that both versions should have.

If you want to add a new command, like say "Drop Line," is the same thing as "New Line," that has been killing me then you will need to get Dragon Professional. Or let's say that you want Dragon to have a very specific "tab" option because you are a writer and you need it to manually input four spaces at a new paragraph, then saying "Tab" doesn't help you at all and you'll need the Professional version of Dragon to add new indentation options. By the way Nuance, "Tab" is less common than "Indent" ; If you don't need new commands and you are transcribing easier stuff, not a full length novel you've written by hand , then you'll be happy to know that Dragon Home 15 is very handy and the commands are easy to learn.
